A Tune-Up Can Rejuvenate Your Older Vehicle

Many engines need a “tune-up” at about 75,000 miles. A cleaning and tune-up of your fuel injection system and engine can revitalize your vehicle for many more miles of trouble free service. Signs that it might be time for a tune-up include:

  • Check engine light
  • Less power and responsiveness
  • Drop off in fuel economy
  • Stalling, knocking, or rough idling
  • Difficult starts

Why It's Important

A tune-up can:

  • Restore power
  • Restore performance
  • Restore fuel economy
  • Ensure reliable starts
  • Reduce harmful emissions

Today’s fuel injection systems computer-assisted engines can benefit from a tune-up anywhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. Your owner’s manual will provide additional guidance.

What's a Tune-Up?

In the pre- fuel injection era, a mechanic would “tune” the engine by adjusting the ignition timing, idle speed, and air to fuel mixture. Today, your auto technician will inspect, and in some cases replace the:

  • Air and fuel filters
  • Spark plugs and spark plug coils/wires
  • PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) valve

And clean the:

  • Fuel system (fuel injector, intake valve, combustion chamber)
  • Air intake system (throttle body, throttle plate)

We use the Valvoline Performance System™ 3-Step Fuel and Air Intake Cleaning System to remove deposits from the entire fuel and air intake system. Depending on the engine design, some vehicles might need additional parts and service, including replacement of the distributor/distributor cap, rotors, points, and condensers.

Your Car & Oil Changes: The Facts

For optimal performance and maximal engine life, the experts at Ken Towery's recommend the following:

  • Follow your vehicle’s maintenance schedule, as well as the instructions in your owner’s manual. Take a look at the maximum number of miles or months that your manufacturer recommends between oil changes and follow this maintenance schedule routinely.
  • Use your vehicle’s oil monitoring system as a guideline.
  • If your vehicle has over 75,000 miles, our experts recommend switching to motor oil formulated to condition aging engine seals.
  • For majority of vehicles, especially newer cars and trucks, synthetic and synthetic mineral blend oils are ideal for all driving conditions, including stop-and-go driving, frequent car trips, and towing.
